What does the conflict of between teachers and mothers have to do with society?

Education and Values

Education and Society

Education and elementary schools are still big tools for socialization and teachers have different ideas of what is important for students to learn. The most conflict arises when there are differences in values for societal importance. Currently, there has been a shift of focus in schools from student performance to teacher performance since the passing of No Child Left Behind. The bill was made to make sure that students all over the United States were getting a good education. This put more strain on teachers to perform their duties to the highest degree. And with teachers performing at the highest degree , it will trickle down to their students who will now be performing at their highest degree.

Teachers are expected to be moral people, which translates to conservative expectations. Because of this, parents expect for teachers to enrich their child’s mind with knowledge that has been approved by society. Teachers should conform to the norms of society. Teaching is considered a caring profession and many teachers take this to heart by trying to instill life skills into their students. This happens in all grades, teaching social skills in elementary school then personal responsibility and hard work to high school students.   For a long time, teachers were expected to instill morals and good social skills in their students, but now parents are casting too much responsibility on parents for the child’s moral development. When teachers match the standard the mothers’ have, there is better interaction.

There is also an appreciation for teachers who are older because they likely have similarities to the teachers who taught them.  The stereotype that is created by experience and the media can get in the way of genuine conversation because the mother may be talking to a construct rather than the person in front of them. When dealing with a teacher closer to the mother’s age, social values are the most important thing in determining whether the mother will trust the teacher. Teachers interact better with mothers that fit their idea of what a mother is supposed to be. When a mother is not supportive or aggressive toward a teacher, she causes frustration and helplessness to the teacher who is looking out for their child.
