Teachers and Gender

There have been changes to how many teachers are male and female as shown in the chart below,  but there is still a divide about which gender teaches which grade. As a student gets older the more male teachers the parents will encounter.

In recent years, there seem to be many teachers who leave teaching or retire after the age of 50. Because of that, many young and inexperienced teachers are now making up a larger percentage of teachers. It is a new trend that teachers and mothers are from the same generation. Teachers that are viewed as age peers or younger have their authority and expertise questioned by parents.

Research has shown that mothers tend to trust older teachers because of their experience and they usually fit the mold mothers expect teachers to fit in.

TEACHERS AND MOTHERS

Teachers have been changing in demographics very slowly over the years. The teaching profession is still dominated by white women but there are minority races rising up, especially Hispanic men, according to the National Center for Education (2011).

Teachers are usually college educated which matches the rise in secondary education in the current 20-30 age range. The mothers who seem to get along the best with teachers are mothers that who have a college degree or have middle class life style.
